CMAA California Rising CM Conference

The Rising Construction Management (CM) Conference will be held this year on Sunday, October 27 from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM at the San Francisco Marriott Marquis. This event is hosted by the CMAA San Diego, Southern California and Northern California Chapters and offers our California Student Chapters as well as Students and Emerging Professionals in the AEC Industry the ability to network with our many CM Partners and Industry Associates throughout the state.

OVERVIEW OF COMPETITION

Applicants are given three options to participate and win scholarship awards by responding to competition requirements for each submission category. Applicants are eligible to submit in one or more categories but must attend the conference to be able to receive the award. Only California students enrolled in Architectural, Engineering or Construction (AEC) related programs are eligible to participate.

1. Category One: Student Chapter or Club A/E/C program
2. Category Two: ASC Teams from California institutions participating in the most recent ASC Competition 
3. Category Three: Individual Students

CATEGORY ONE:

STUDENT CHAPTER OR CLUB A/E/C PROGRAM PROMPT

The prompt, described below, forms the basis of this competition, and should be referenced when responding to this request.

Prompt: The demographic and makeup of the design and construction industry is rapidly changing. A shift in the way which the workplace is viewed and how projects are being executed makes it a dynamic time to choose a college, determine a major, consider a career and enter the workforce.

The construction industry and the Construction Management profession has stood the test of time as an excellent choice for a career path due to its diverse set of specialties and opportunities for a variety of individuals of different backgrounds and interests – Construction has been classified as an essential business and offers many opportunities in an ever-changing global economy.

The competition between universities, colleges, community colleges and trade programs to attract top talent to their programs has intensified. Based on this, what special characteristics of your institution and program would attract prospective students to both attend your school and choose a major in Construction Management, Architecture, Engineering, or related degree?

How has your relationship with CMAA and other associations or professional organizations allowed for more robust opportunities to your specific student population and made your students more marketable to the industry?

What aspects of your Program set your students apart from others and make them more prepared to enter the workforce?

PRESENTATION DESCRIPTION

A team should consist of no more than 5 individuals, 1 alternate and either a Faculty Member or CMAA Emerging Professional Coach (7-member team all from the same school). If your team does not have a Faculty Member participant, reach out to your local CMAA Chapter to identify a CMAA Emerging Professional Coach. The presentation content should be of a duration that is  no more than 5 minutes to address the prompt and information listed above. Note: Winners from prior years are eligible to participate but cannot submit the same presentation and should encourage new students to participate. The presentation must be recorded and if shortlisted will be presented during the CMAA California Rising CM Conference. Teams may utilize electronic presentations, visual boards, audio/video content or verbal narratives to convey their response to the prompt. Creativity is highly encouraged, including use of social media to highlight the event with the following hashtags: #RisingCM, #CMAASC, #CMAANorCal, and #CMAASanDiego. 

 

The teams should address how their experiences, curriculum and extracurricular memberships and participation set their program apart, including but not limited to:

• Ability to assemble project budgets and cost estimates.
• Education in the analysis, update, and monitoring of project schedules.
• Analysis of engineering and building systems.
• Education related to on-site construction representation, observation, and reporting.
• Understanding of sustainable design and energy efficiency requirements including such items as LEED and Zero Net Energy (ZNE).
• Use of project management information systems to aid in the day-to-day delivery of projects.
• Any special education in technology and other software that accelerates construction and eases management of the construction management profession.
• Program differentiators that make your graduates unique. (Location, faculty, specialty courses, partnerships, etc.)
• Incorporation of the CMAA Standards of Practice in to lectures
• Acknowledgement and recognition of the CMIT Certification as part of the education program
• The team's participation with their local CMAA Chapter.

MINIMUM SUBMITTAL REQUIREMENTS

Student teams that are interested in responding to this RFP shall submit the following information:

1. Letter of Interest that includes the presenting team’s information including the following:
   1. Institution
   2. Degree Level
   3. Major
   4. Team Member Name (for each member)
   5. Phone Number (for each member)
   6. Email (for each member)
   7. Resume (for each member of the team and for each registrant from your institution)

1. Recorded Presentation document with audio or other similar presentation pitch that:
   1. Addresses the prompt (outlined above):
   2. Highlights the following:

• i. Special characteristics of your Institution and Program would attract prospective students to both attend your Institution and choose a major in Construction Management, Architecture, Engineering, or related degree.
• ii. Your relationship with CMAA and other associations or professional organizations that have made students from your Institution more marketable to the industry.
• iii. Aspects of your Program that set your students apart from others and make them more prepared to enter the workforce.
• iv. Address how their experiences, curriculum and extracurricular memberships and participation set their program apart.

CATEGORY TWO:

ASC COMPETITION OPTION

A team that participated in the most recent ASC Competition can duplicate their presentation for this competition. A team of no more than 5 individuals, 1 alternate and either a Faculty Member or CMAA Emerging Professional Coach (7-member team all from the same school).  If your team does not have a Faculty Member participant,reach out to your local CMAA Chapter to identify a CMAA Emerging Professional Coach. The presentation content should be of a duration that should be no more than 5 minutes. The presentation must be recorded and if shortlisted will be presented during the CMAA California Rising CM Conference. Teams may utilize electronic presentations, visual boards, audio/video content or verbal narratives to convey their message. Creativity is highly encouraged including use of social media to highlight the event with the following hashtags: #CMAASC, #CMAANorCal, and #CMAASanDiego.

   1. Addresses the Team’s ASC competition presentation.

CATEGORY THREE: 

MINIMUM SUBMITTAL REQUIREMENTS FOR INDIVIDUAL SCHOLARSHIPS

Students who have submitted scholarship applications in 2024 to one of our CMAA California Chapters during the year and are still enrolled in school will be considered in addition to any new applicants by simply confirming your information in your letter of interest so that we can verify your application submission. There is no need to provide a personal statement or video. Those interested in responding to this RFP shall submit the following information:

1. Letter of Interest that includes your information including the following:
   1. Institution
   2. Degree level
   3. Major
   4. Name
   5. Phone Number
   6. Email
   7. Resume

1. Personal Statement in PDF format comprised of 750 to 1,000 words or up to a 5-minute video describing the following:
   1. Goals you have for your career.
   2. Your involvement with CMAA and what you have benefited most fro the Programs provided.
   3. What makes you passionate about the construction industry?
   4. What do you expect to learn as you enter the workforce?
   5. How do you plan to push the limits of what’s possible?
   6. Include any hardships or challenges you have or will need to overcome.

ALL CATEGORIES ONE, TWO AND THREE:

Submissions must be received and uploaded to the registration site no later than Monday, October 14, 2024, at 5:00 PM PT (DEADLINE EXTENDED). Follow the instructions on the registration site and note that no file size greater than 10MB will be accepted.

Students may participate in one or more categories. Submissions will be reviewed by the selection committee and ranked. Top presentations will be highlighted during the event. Winners of the scholarship prizes will be announced before the end of the conference and will be contacted after the conference to confirm payment information.

ADDITIONAL CONSIDERATIONS

In addition to student presentations, school participation is also a consideration in selecting the winning team(s). Be sure to encourage students from your school to register for the event and increase your ranking even if submitting as an individual.

Presentations must be submitted via the registration web portal (instructions are provided upon registering).
